Avatars are lame

Seriously - they made the new Xbox "experience" an even more cumbersome thing to navigate (the old one was pretty good and efficient), but the whole idea of avatars is such a hacky kiddie thing. It wouldn't be so bad if you could get rid off all the crap. I really don't care what they're pushing with the spotlight and xbox today crap, and now it's tossed in your face so you can't ignore it, but the only thing you can hide that I can find is the Welcome to Xbox stuff. The Netflix integration is pretty good, much nicer on the surface than Roku's box (although why they used a stupid cell phone signal indicator instead of the easy to read dots like Roku is a little odd, not to mention hard to actually see on a quick glance). At least the dashboard is responsive - but other than adding in new ways to throw bigger ads at you, there really is no point to this forced "update" (Netflix could had been added to the old media blade).

edit: Installing Fallout 3 to the hard drive kicks ass. Although I doubt the shorter load times and quicker response time in-game will be as good for older games, the noise reduction from not having the obnoxiously loud optical drive alone would almost be worth paying for!

Rebuilt the hard drive unit for the Xbox360, and although finding a machine that would work was a little chore, in the end it was painless and less than half the price of buying a new official one. Plus the new hard drive has ShockGuard and SoftSeek technologies in it so it's faster, quieter, and less likely to break than the original. DIY FTW!

It seems more and more these days that I find stuff I've been taught to be wholly incorrect (yay education!). Sneaked is the correct word, and snuck is another Americanism that's crept it's way into common vernacular.
I tried rebuilding the DVD drive from my Xbox360, but even after getting the mechanics working, it still doesn't spin anymore. So I went to the place i hate most and bought a new new one (with the 2 year extended warranty - only an idiot would not get this on an Xbox). It lasted less than 12 hours! Something was really screwy with the network interface - took 3 hours to download one game update because it wouldn't connect for more than 30 seconds at a time, and the only way I could get it to make a connection was to change the MAC address in the settings (which makes no sense no matter how you look at it).

So Saturday we go and replace it (that's 4 replacements in 2 months between me and one other friend!). We run it for the night at my friend's house no problems. I hook it up this morning at my house, and I get a fucking red light on the front! Turns out the fucking thing fried my hard drive! All my game saves (not to mention videos, demos, and everything else) are gone.

All I want to do is fucking play Fallout 3 for fucks sake!

I gotta say that they have done an incredible job with that show. If the changes they've made the past few years is any indication, the show will go on fine (if they let it). Odd enough, I didn't like it initially when he took over the role, and they when Rose left I just stopped watching it until recently (now playing catch-up of course). Of course Billie Piper's new show, Secret Diary of a Call Girl is just yummy (the Brits love their boobs, and they actually show them on TV over there), but seeing her back as Rose a few times made the past season that much better.

When then I jumped back in, I felt foolish for not giving this brilliant show a fair chance at that time. Tennant's Doctor is one of the best sci-fi characters on TV (second only to David Hewlett's Rodney McKay on the recently canceled Stargate Atlantis), and the show simply keeps getting better. When they spun-off Torchwood, a great show in it's own right, it made me wonder where the hell all the good sci-fi has gone over here on the other side of the Tardis. (Sci-Fi channel killed sci-fi when they killed Farscape and started in with the shitty reality shows, but you saw that one coming from me didn't you? :-p)

Oh well, at least you can respect his reasons. You gotta love a guy that knows how to get out when it's good and will remain in fan's hearts for what he's done with the character before it's gets stale. It's nice to see that some people care more about integrity than money in this day and age.

Finally took my road test this morning and got my license back after over 7 years without one. Made a right turn, a left turn, parallel parked, made another right and the cute Asian girl that was in charge told me she was cutting the test short and we went beck to the site. She filled out some paperwork and commented how nice it was to have an an easy one for a change (referring to the test people, not me!), so I said "I guess that's a good thing?" and she smiled, said yes, and told me to keep the big yellow paper with me when I drive (until I get the new one in the mail) as she walked away.

My friend that lent me his car came over and asked it went OK, and if I realized how fast I was because everyone that went ahead of me was still out (at least 4 other cars/instructors). Sometimes it goes easy.
Bonus Fallout 2 Triva:

The music playing when the player enters the town of Redding changes, but one track heard comes from the soundtrack to the TV miniseries The Stand from the book by Stephen King, which was about a world devastated not by nuclear war, but by a supercharged version of the flu.
Fallout 3

Let's get one thing straight - This is not Fallout or Fallout 2 (or either of the bastardizations), it's Fallout 3. It's not a continuation of the series by the original creators, it's a re-imagining by a studio that felt it better to give this wildly popular and influential franchise the live and future it deserves rather that fade out to cult-status obscurity.

It's a re-imagining of the game that does a good job of sticking to established cannon and time lines. Yes they changed stuff, but it's not a re-release or a continuation of the original version of Van Buren (what would have been Fallout 3 if Black Isle and Interplay didn't go tits-up) - it's a new game that invokes the thematic feel of the series in a more visual way that the originals. Bethesda has gone out of their way to bring some insanely cool things to promote the game that look like they were pulled right out of the dystopian alternate time line, as well as fitting in their new ideas with the established ones. The Fallout universe may be heading on a different path than originally intended, but thankfully they've got a lot of experience behind them to try and pull it off.

R.I.P. Don LaFontaine

Voiceover Master Don LaFontaine has died. Movie trailers will never be the same again....

LaFontaine, known as the "King of Voiceovers," died Monday afternoon at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. LaFontaine's agent, Vanessa Gilbert, tells ET that he passed away following complications from Pneumothorax, the presence of air or gas in the pleural cavity, the result of a collapsed lung. The official cause of death has not yet been released.

Over the past 25 years, LaFontaine cemented his position as the "King of Voiceovers." Aside from being the preeminent voice in the movie trailer industry, Don also worked as the voice of Entertainment Tonight and The Insider, as well as for CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox and UPN, in addition to TNT, TBS and the Cartoon Network. By conservative estimates, he voiced hundreds of thousands of television and radio spots, including commercials for Chevrolet, Pontiac, Ford, Budweiser, McDonalds, Coke, and many other corporate sponsors.

He recently parodied himself on a series of national television commercials for Geico. At last count, he has worked on nearly 5000 films, including appearances as the in-show announcer for the Screen Actors Guild and Academy Awards. Based on contracts signed, he has the distinction of being perhaps the single busiest actor in the history of SAG. Don is survived by his wife -- singer/actress Nita Whitaker, and three children: Christine, Skye and Elyse.

One of the few actors people my age can actually say we grew up with and, until recently, never actually knew who he was. It's nice he finally stepped out of the voice-over booth, especially displaying a sense of humor about the whole thing, cementing his deserved place in pop-culture history.

R.I.P. Stargate Atlantis

Stargate Atlantis' 5 year run is ending. I knew it was gonna happen last year when they made it clear that they want to get a third series going, but not at the same time as Atlantis is running because of the problems they had running SG1 and Atlantis for three years together before ending SG1's historical 10 year/214 episode run as the longest running SciFi show in US television history (and anchoring what has become pretty much the most popular science fiction franchise worldwide, finally giving Star Trek some real competition). Add in the fact that they recently announced that they would run the entire 5th season of Atlantis consecutively instead of the recent (and fucking stupid) trend of splitting the season into two, and it was obvious they wanted to clear the schedule and money up for the new series to get underway ASAP.

Well, at least they got their 5th season, unlike Farscape (No, I'll never forgive that twit for what she did to my favorite show of all time!)

RIAA has to pay Tanya Andersen $107,951

"Well, Phase I of the RIAA's misguided pursuit of an innocent, disabled Oregon woman, Atlantic v. Andersen, has finally drawn to a close, as the RIAA was forced to pay Ms. Andersen $107,951, representing the amount of her attorneys fee judgment plus interest. But as some have pointed out, reimbursement for legal fees doesn't compensate Ms. Andersen for the other damages she's sustained. And that's where Phase II comes in, Andersen v. Atlantic. There the shoe is on the other foot, and Tanya is one doing the hunting, as she pursues the record companies and their running dogs for malicious prosecution. Should be interesting."

SEGA Game Archive FTW!

The SEGA Game Archive

In a small unassuming area in the product development department is a room that contains some very special SEGA history. In this room is the SEGA archive and contains just about every game that’s come out on a SEGA console in the past and present, as well as a ton of extremely rare or strange peripherals. We stumbled upon the room when we were taking photos of the department post-move and made a point to come back for pictures so everyone can see all there is to see.

We asked around about how the room came together and couldn’t get a straight answer. Some had said our old legal department had run the archive and given it up to someone else to manage. Others said that the legal archive still exists in another room in the office, and this was pulled together over time from producers and product managers. We don’t know the exact how or why, but we love that it exists and immediately accessible.

Yet another reason to hate Stern...

Dear Howard - Please stay the fuck away from Rock 'n' Roll High School

That's right - he's co-producing a remake of the cult classic Rock 'n' Roll High School. What's worse? It's being written by Bill S. Preston, Esq. (IOW - the guy from Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure that isn't Keanu Reeves). There's already been one failed sequel to the original, oddly enough staring a guy that Winters <strike>stared with</strike> appeared with in The Lost Boys, so why go and remake (screw with) it?
