.: Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars Review :..: 09/05/04 :.
I finally finished watching the Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars mini-series that my brother got me (over a month until it comes out on Sci-Fi, this is a reviewers DVD set and the second part is not completely finished). It's like they never went away - the magic is still very much alive in the Farscape universe.
The Peacekeeper Wars is a fitting end to the greatest Sci-Fi series ever. Unlike that nightmare inducing season 4 finale, leaving the series ending with "To be continued...", the mini-series that's comes out in a little over a month's time ties up a lot of unanswered and open plot lines. I'm not going to even bother giving it a full review, it's just too good to spoil, not to mention they ask nicely in the Intro of the booklet :-P I will, however, make one gripe - what the hell is up with Pilot's voice? It's the same person doing the voice as always (Lani Tupu - AKA Crais, the estranged Peacekeeper from the first few seasons), yet it sounds like he sucking on helium and then speaking through a voice changer to bring the pitch down. While there is closure on a lot of things, they do leave quite a bit hanging. Very easy to pick up and go if the impossible happens again. I don't know if the packaging will transfer over to the retail release of the DVDs, but this copy is really cool. It's a full paper/cardboard box, with a pull tab that opens both ends. The top holds the 2 DVDs, and the bottom has a booklet. Box opened to expose DVDs on top. Booklet is in the bottom section Box, DVDs (bar code on the bottom of the disc's blurred out "just in case"), and booklet Booklet open to the Into. (contact info blurred out) You'll notice in that picture of the Intro page that the second disc (Night 2) is unfinished. There are a few visual effects that are not completed (and whenever they are on screen, there's a message telling you that they are still in progress), and the audio is a little off. Not really noticeable, but definitely makes me look forward to the premiere in October more! We find out a lot of interesting things - like the true purpose of the Peacekeepers (and their origins). We get introduced to yet another group of aliens. We get to see characters doing things that were alluded to in the regular series (think about the man knowing his mud). We get re-introduced to some old "freinds". Just imagine how much stuff they can usually cram into 4 episodes, and then expect more in this 4 hour series. All in all, expect the same plot twists, and some happy endings as well as some very sad endings for our favorite band of outlaws. (Note: Don't even ask - there is no way that I will rip this and distribute it! Watch the damned thing and get this mini-series it's rightly deserved ratings, then go out and buy it when it comes out on DVD. I won't part with it either, so don't try asking)

The other review at Ain't It Cool News was very positive except it said that the mini-series isn't accessible for new viewers who haven't watched the series (I know this is only one guys take on it, it couldn't be that hard to figure out what's going on).
Did you find this to be the case? Because Brian Henson & DK et al have said that the mini-series is newbie friendly. I hope it is, because the future of Farscape depends on the mini's success.
Cheers

They do have the required flashback/catch-up scene, although done more Farscape-ish than the usual :)
If anything, I wouldn't call it totally newbie friendly, but I do think it would raise the interest of a number of people enough to make them watch the series' DVD's now theat they are all accessible.
